About Ivy Shuman

As a woodturner for over 20 years, my work encompasses both functional and artistic forms, including natural edge turnings, classic bowls and vases, flower bowls, business and home accessories, as well as pieces combining turning and carving techniques. 

I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, raised in Chicago, and have resided in Southern California for over 40 years.  My studio is located in Chatsworth, California in the San Fernando Valley.  I began woodworking in 1977 making furniture, fly tying boxes and bookcases.  My first lathe was purchased in 1984 and so began my love with the turned form of artistic expression.  I am a full-time artist and my work is currently sold through Southern California art galleries, shows and specialty shops.

I handpick all my woods from the finest domestic and exotic stocks available.  Purchased woods are acquired from sources that are environmentally responsible.  I work with many woods, but my favorite woods to work with are cocobolo, unique spalted woods, burls of all kinds, and maples.
