Buckeye Burl Selections |
|
Many of these pieces of buckeye burl could easily be shown in the Natural Edge Sections. The pieces shown here are all California Buckeye. I acquired several large burls (36 x 36 x 60!!!) and began cutting them up with my chainsaw into manageable sizes for these turnings. Buckeye burl is an amazing wood; the color and figure invites one to sit and imagine all sorts of shapes and forms, not unlike looking for images in the clouds. Spalting, voids, and bark inclusions add immeasurably to the interest of the various bowls, hollowforms, and vases. Please Contact Us regarding your interest in buckeye burl. Hollowform V This Buckeye Burl Hollowform, is approximately 11 inches diameter x 8 inches tall. The colors range from black to cream and the entire hollowform is highly figured. A reverse-turned foot lifts the turning off the table and gives it a nice elevated look. The voids invites one to look into the hollowform, rather like exploring a cave. Several eyes around the void peer back at the viewer.
Vase, Buckeye I love this vase! It has everything: A beautifully balanced, sloping natural edge top; voids, critter holes, bark inclusions; it is highly figured throughout; and the black top half balances perfectly with the creamy bottom. It is approximately 8 inches diameter x 11 inches tall. Sorry, it has been sold, but new pieces are always coming around.
Another Buckeye Burl hollowform with exceptional figure, voids, and color.
Buckeye Hollowform Ball II This Buckeye Burl Hollowform was turned into a ball form. It is approximately 5" diameter x 6" tall. A reverse-turned foot gives it a tall, 1" lift off the table.
Buckeye Hollowform III I turn many of my buckeye hollowforms with this "flatter" shape, in many diameters. This particular piece is approximately 8" diameter x 3-1/2" tall. It displays all the wonderful beauty of buckeye burl.
Buckeye Vase This Buckeye Burl Vase was turned with a finished top. It is approximately 3-1/2" diameter x 8" tall. I chose a simple vase form and allowed the wood to speak for itself. It has some wonderful voids and bark inclusions, but the figures just kept popping up every time someone picked up the vase. When you pick it up and turn it on its side, or up-side-down, something else just pops out at you. It currently resides in a private collection in Napa, California.
Buckeye Burl, Broken Egg Vase I only had a vague idea where this ball form vase was going to end up when I started it. I love the highly figured cream color and wanted to enhance it with my turning. I elected to go with a more rounded form to allow the buckeye burl to show off. One of the earliest comments I received when it was shown was, "It looks like a broken egg!" I just loved that so it became my "Broken Egg Vase."
Buckeye Hollowform Another example of a Buckeye Burl Hollowform. This piece is approximately 9" diameter x 5". What I especially like about this hollowform is the creamy figure showing on the left side of the image. I see a comet streaming through space. What do you see?
Buckeye Vase w/stitches This vase was turned utilizing my stitching method. As it took shape on my lathe, I could see the void down the side would play a significant factor in the finished vase. By adding walnut stitches a beautiful wing of black, and highly figured buckeye burl was retained, and nicely balances the color at the front of the vase.
